Out Now: Laurence Cousseau Quintet Releases ‘Les Groseilles de Novembre’ by Off Record
Laurence Cousseau Quintet has released its debut album Les Groseilles de Novembre on Off Records. The album is framed within an aesthetic of magical realism, exploring the boundary between the tangible and the dreamlike.
Inspired by Andrus Kivirähk’s literary work, the music moves through themes of transition and memory, shaped by bodies, landscapes, and inherited traditions. These in-between spaces become the foundation for a poetic musical language that structures composition, improvisation, rhythm, and texture.
At the core of the ensemble’s sound is the interplay between alto flute and bass clarinet. Influences ranging from Eric Dolphy and Charles Mingus to Olivier Messiaen and contemporary improvisers and composers such as Magic Malik and Bo Van der Werf.
Formed by Laurence Cousseau, the quintet brings together musicians from Brussels’ young contemporary jazz and experimental scenes, shaping a sound rooted in collective improvisation and composition.
